Strange Soul

SOUL/FUNK
The last comp in this run of the ‘Strange’ series is an awesome collection of funk & soul tracks (mostly) from the ‘70s – the golden era of black music. As with the ‘Strange Jazz’ comp, music fans will be playing “pick the sample”. The unifying concepts here are: deepness & funkiness.
The selection is again refreshing and original with some familiar names spiced amongst some that deserve to be more familiar: SLY & THE FAMILY STONE, THE ISLEY BROTHERS, EARTH WIND & FIRE appear alongside underground heroes like DON BLACKMAN, LARRY YOUNG, CHOCOLATE MILK, WELDON IRVINE, BERNARD WRIGHT and more. The lone contemporary track is OUTKAST’s SHUGGIE OTIS homage “Prototype”.
Jazz collides with soul courtesy of JON HENDRICKS with his vocal version of Coltrane’s “Naima” & and the album closer – IDRIS MUHAMMED’s version of the HENDRIX track (that could define this comp) “Power Of Soul”.
Soul, jazz & funk live and breathe together on ‘Strange Soul’. Again the liner notes and packaging are superb. Rack all three together!
