Namoi Mud
Laughing Outlaw
COUNTRY/ROOTS
After the huge success of GEOFFREY GURRUMUL YUNUPINGU’s recent album, many music lovers have been looking for something with a similar feel and soulful quality. ‘Namoi Mud’, the debut album from singer / songwriter L.J. HILL is that album. LJ has drawn upon musical influences from such disparate musicians as
MERLE HAGGARD, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and TOM T. HALL but his sound is unique.
The album was recorded, mixed and produced by BRENDAN GALLAGHER (KARMA COUNTY), the man who re-invented JIMMY LITTLE on his landmark ‘Messenger’ album.
These are beautiful songs about love and family that look back over a colourful life, all sung with a unique, world weary voice. This is a man of rich life experience - over the decades he has been a Rugby League player, rodeo bull rider, shearer and ‘gentleman of the streets’ in Melbourne and Sydney. THIS ALBUM IS FAST BECOMING A CRITIC’S FAVE
THE AUSTRALIAN “4/5. With an Irish grandfather and Aboriginal and Cherokee parents, L.J. Hill is the focus of three strong and soulful traditions of storytelling that stream through his deceptively simple songs, delivered in a voice as smooth and appealing as wild honey.” MUSIC AUSTRALIA GUIDE (‘Hand-picked Recommendation’) “L.J Hill’s face and songs bear the marks of a hard, if full life. His songs talk of loss and yearning, in the storytelling style of Archie Roach, vocally akin to Kev Carmody.” RHYTHMS “He sings about struggle and hardship, lost family and lost love, in a tone that has the conviction of an Archie Roach, Kutcha Edwards or Kev Carmody, yet a style that is incontrovertibly his own.” PERRY KEYES “LJ is like an old oak tree that can sing.”
