Where do we start with Vampire Weekend? Well, let’s start with the local accolades their debut album has already collected before it’s even been released:
JJJ Album Of The Week
FBi Album Of the Week
The most talked about band at CMJ, New York’s favorite new band Vampire Weekend release their brilliant debut album which undoubtedly nods it’s head to the likes of Talking Heads and Afro Beat legend Fela Kuti. The album has been described as The Strokes playing Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland’.
Debut single ‘Mansard Roof’ is a huge favorite at JJJ already appearing in their Top 10 J Play and next single ‘A Punk’ due for servicing in early 2008.
Vampire Weekend formed and cut their musical teeth at NYC’s Columbia’s University, taking their name from a film that frontman Ezra Koenig wrote and trailered.
The band have been setting Gotham alight with a series of celebratory live performances over the summer, sharing bills with the likes of Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors and Ra Ra Riot as well as selling out headline shows at the legendary Bowery Ballroom and the Music Hall of Williamsburg.
The album is a beguiling mix of this preppy young band’s direct, danceable tunes and afrobeat-tinged, experimental pop – music from New York’s hottest new band that challenges any preconceptions of what a New York band is meant to sound like.
